HUMMINGBIRD MIGRATION FAQ
- Hummingbirds migrate 2 times a year (Spring & Fall).
- They spend the Winter in Mexico & South America.
- In the Spring Hummers migrate to their breeding grounds in North America where Flower Nectar & Insects are abundant.
- In the Fall they return to their winter homes in Mexico & Central America.
HOW DO THEY KNOW WHEN TO MIGRATE?
- Migration occurs with the Change of Seasons (Spring & Fall).
- The Warm South Wind guides them North in the Spring.
- In the Fall the declining Sunlight, temperature & food sources trigger their Instincts to fly South.
DO HUMMINGBIRDS RETURN TO THE SAME PLACE?
- Yes, if it is a good habitat for the Hummers they will return to the same place every year to feed & nest.
WHEN SHOULD YOU SET UP FEEDERS?
- 1-2 Weeks before the Hummers are expected in your area
- Southern US & Gulf Coast (Feb - Mar)
- Middle Latitudes (April)
- Northern US (May)
FALL FUEL-UP MIGRATION ~ HOW CAN YOU HELP HUMMINGBIRDS?
- Hummers will need to increase their body weight 25-50% for the long trek back to Mexico & South America.
- You can have additional Feeders to help the Hummers Fuel-up!
- You should see large amounts of Hummers coming to your Feeders in the Fall.
WHEN SHOULD YOU TAKE DOWN FEEDERS?
- November (2 weeks after last Hummer Sighting)
- Feeds won't keep them from Migrating
- Clean & pack away until next Spring
HOW CAN I ATTRACT MORE HUMMERS IN THE SPRING?
- Have your Feeders out 2 weeks before their arrival!
- Hummers love Red. Hang red ribbons near Feeders
- Keep Nectar Fresh. Change every 2-3 days
- Plant Favorite Hummer Flowers that Bloom early
